A Blogger Does Boudoir

27th January 2018

You may remember back in August I posted a blog piece Eterno in the Land of the Blue Rinse, which was the first in a series of ‘Bloggers that Boudoir’ posts. The intention was to work with a few female bloggers and have them write about the experience from their own angle.
This post is the second in this series and features Natalie Reynolds, the name and face behind the fashion and beauty blog Ginger Natalie….so named, as you’ll see, because she has beautiful red hair.

I imagined Natalie’s slant on this experience would have been fashion/beauty based, instead it was a much more pertinent subject. Her post BRING ON THE BOUDOIR is a fantastically open and frank piece, which discusses her past experience with negative body image, more precisely BDD (Body Dysmorphic Disorder), and eating disorders. I think is not only brave, but totally in keeping with the ethos of Eterno Boudoir. Namely, learning to love yourself.

How I see it...
Accepting yourself and having a negative body image are clearly worlds apart. When Natalie previously opened up on this subject on her blog, it became clear that she wasn’t alone in suffering the same issues. Although BDD maybe a more severe form of negative body confidence, nearly every woman I talk to regards herself as imperfect in some way. I ask, what is the perfect body? The answer - there isn’t such a thing. But that isn’t what the fashion and fitness industries want us to believe. Is it?
Apart from the obviously sad backstory to this piece, Natalie mentions her blog item that this photo session was on and off many times, namely because of the concerns and worries she talks about. This is not uncommon. Often women will get cold feet about going through with their session, that’s if they’ve actually got to the stage of organising the shoot. Many are too nervous to enquire in the first place, despite desperately wanting to have their own Boudoir session.

It may come as a surprise to hear, but I am happy to accept hesitation from potential Boudoir clients. After all, it is a very big deal to many, and well outside the comfort zone to almost all.
But as Natalie says about her delaying the shoot in her post, “Looking back now, how silly was I?’’ I’d say, not silly, just normal. Just as Natalie’s story is sadly a common one, so too is the fear and worry about having a Boudoir session. What will people think? Am I the right size/weight?...amongst others.

I’ll let this quote from Natalie answer those concerns. This is her recollection of the photo session.

“I INSTANTLY FELT COMFORTABLE AROUND MARTIN, HE PUT ME AT EASE AND MY INITIAL NERVES VANISHED IN MINUTES. THE SHOOT LASTED FOR AROUND 2 HOURS AND WHEN IT WAS OVER I WANTED TO CONTINUE AND GET MORE AND MORE IMAGES. I FELT LIBERATED AND RELEASED A NEW FOUND CONFIDENCE…... I INSTANTLY WANTED TO BOOK IN TO DO ANOTHER SHOOT…..”

This is not an unusual response. Quite often ladies will want to carry on, or book another session straight away, without even seeing a photo from the shoot. It’s that feeling of liberation that Natalie talks about above. It is no wonder that I have a number returning customers, who are all too eager to repeat the experience. Ironically, many of those displayed the most hesitation and nerves before their first Boudoir experience.

Final Thoughts
I’ll leave that to Natalie...she sums things up perfectly.

“I HAVE DONE THIS SHOOT FOR ME, TO CELEBRATE MY BODY, TO SHOW JUST HOW FAR I HAVE COME AND TO REMIND MYSELF THAT I AM ME, UNIQUE AND HAPPY TO BE LIKE NO ONE ELSE. I WOULD RECOMMEND DOING A BOUDOIR SHOOT TO ABSOLUTELY EVERYONE.”
